History

Port of Varberg has been an important site since the Middle Ages, with an important geographic position for both seafarers and the local population. This is why activity in the harbour has had the wind in its sails since the middle of the 19th century. Since then, ships from what were then referred to as foreign countries have been loaded and unloaded by men who braved the weather and wind at all times of day and night.

In the beginning, most of the work was manual labour and hard graft, done by brave dockers who taught future generations the art of collaborating. As time passed, the harbour has developed and changed its appearance to what it is today.

Since 1849, the port of Varberg has built up quays and breakwaters. Through the years new quays are enlarged for handling of wood, cotton wool, cars, pulp etc. The stevedoring was operated by for example Gust Magnussons Eftr. (Magnusson Shipping) and Krook & Co.

The stevedoring company Terminal West AB started in 1972 by Södra Skogsägarna, PLM AB, Gyproc AB, Sveriges Redareförening and the municipality of Varberg and took over the operation at the port of Varberg the same year.

The municipality of Varberg became the full owner of the company in 2002.
